University of Southern California

History

The Department of Emergency Medicine at LAC+USC provides world-class emergency, trauma and medical services to the County's 10 million residents. It was the first EM residency on the West Coast and one of the first in the US. It is the County's largest emergency department, the backbone of the County's safety net for emergency care, and the County's "Flagship" trauma center providing more than 28% of all trauma care in Los Angeles County. It has one of the largest alumni networks in EM with over 650 graduates of the program.

The DEM is also the sponsor of one of the largest CME events in Emergency Medicine, Essentials of Emergency Medicine, and offers one of the medical school's most coveted clerkships, winning the award for Educational Excellence in 1997, 2003, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2014. Their faculty hold or have held leadership positions in the American Board of Emergency Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine.
