History

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at CMESL initiated on July 1, 2008. The program has a highly qualified and dedicated faculty who are all Board Certified in their specialty and have extensive experience in their field and in graduate medical education.

Training Locations

Primary Hospital

Centro Medico Episcopal San Lucas (CMESL)

CMESL is the institution in charge of providing secondary and tertiary health care services to a large population that includes the city of Ponce, as well as other municipalities of the South and Western regions of Puerto Rico. The hospital is a 427 bed facility with state of the art technology that provides graduate medical training to over 90 physicians as well as a large group of medical students from our affiliate, Ponce Health Sciences University.

Secondary Hospital

Administracion de Servicios Medicos de Puerto Rico (ASEM) Trauma rotations and Trauma ICU rotations are done at this facility which is the only level 1 trauma center in Puerto Rico.

Curriculum

The length of training is three (3) years and the number of authorized positions per year are seven (7).

  • 1 block Trauma (ASEM)
  • 1 block Pediatric EM (CMESL)
  • 1 block Emergency Ultrasound
  • 1 block Anesthesia
  • 1 block Cardiology (CCU, Catheterization Lab, Echocardiography)
  • 1 block Obstetrics
  • 1 block Orthopedics
  • 1 block PICU
  • 1 block Vacation
