Harbor:NFL Injured Player/Staff Protocol
NFL players and coaching/training staff may be transported to Harbor-UCLA for a variety of clinical scenarios. Clinical pathways should follow standard processes (e.g Trauma activation criteria). The following procedures are intended to standardize notification of Harbor-UCLA personnel to facilitate the communication requirements and privacy implications of potential NFL Player patients.
- EMS (LACoFD Paramedics) will make base contact or notification re: arriving player from SoFi (may state NFL player as part of report).
- MICN will notify purple ED AttendingBold text of EMS run details including involvement of NFL player, clinical details, and ETA. Harbor ED game physician will also call purple ED Attending on Cisco phone with case details.
- MICN will activate TTA 1/TTA 2/ED Trauma if indicated by standard protocols (same criteria as usual activations), or will announce ALS arrival if non-trauma, and will notify AED Charge RN to prepare appropriate room. These players should be assigned to the Purple Team regardless of “flip-block” rotation.
- AED Charge will notify OCN about NFL player arriving to ED for care and request “Black Out” for confidentiality on Cerner tracking board.
- OCN will notify the House Sup that an NFL player is arriving to the ED for care
- House Sup will notify other hospital administration as they deem applicable (e.g. AOD, COO, CNO, CEO, CMO, etc.). Note: not all NFL players arriving require hospital administration notification. This is intended to prepare for media arrivals for a high-profile event.
- ED Purple Attending will notify Trauma Attending of NFL player arrival via phone call to Trauma Attending Cisco phone for situational awareness if Trauma Team consultation is indicated for the clinical scenario; for TTAs, this phone call would occur soon after the TTA is activated (likely prior to patient arrival)
- For suspected TBI/SCI cases; Trauma attending will directly notify NeuroSx Attending of case specifics and consultation request
- House Sup and hospital AOD will decide if Sheriff notification or special security is required and notify as appropriate
- OCN will notify ED registration to “black out” the patient chart; Harbor ED game physician and ED Attending will confirm chart “black out” occurs
