Background
- Primarily used in prehospital setting by EMT's, Paramedics, etc as a temporary splinting device.
- One of several options including cardboard splints, SAM splint, etc.
Indications
- Suspected extremity fractures
Contraindications
Procedure
Application
- Hold in place around extremity in position of comfort
- Assess that pulse is present below where the device will be applied
- Ensure that the intake valve is facing away from the patient
- Attach manual suction to port and suction out all air
- Some manufacturers make port compatible with impact suction devices
- Adjust as needed
- When all air is suctioned out, use the straps on device to secure in place
- Use triangle bandages to secure further if needed
- Asses pulse below the splint, continue every 10 mins
Removal
- Disconnect straps to remove
- DO NOT cut splint itself (will release contents - polystyrene beads)
