Background

• Reserved for toxins that are both life-threatening and amenable to removal by this method
• Ineffective for toxins that have large Vd, large molecular weight, or protein bound

Indications

• Acidosis
• Hyperkalemia
• Hyponatremia
• Fluid overload
• Uremia
• Overdoses of the following:
  • Salicylates
  • Methanol
  • Ethylene glycol
  • Lithium
  • Theophylline
  • Carbamazepine
  • Amanita mushrooms
