Background

  • Most frequently reported STD
  • Age < 25 most prevalent group
  • Asymptomatic in > 50% of infected individuals

Clinical Features

  1. Vaginal discharge
  2. Intermenstrual bleeding
  3. Urethritis
  4. Epididymitis
  5. Proctitis
  6. Reiter syndrome (urethritis, conjuctivitis, rash)

Complications

  1. PID
  2. Ectopic Pregnancy
  3. Infertility

Differential Diagnosis

Workup

  1. Urine pregnancy
  2. Speculum exam
  3. Endocervical or urethral swab

Treatment

  • Azithromycin 1g PO x 1 OR
  • Doxycycline 100mg PO BID x 7 days

NB:

  1. avoid sex for 7 days to prevent transmission
  2. sexual partners should be referred for testing and treatment
