Background
- Non-diuretic thiazide, arterial vasodilator
- Used to treat severe hypertension
- Reflex response leads to tachycardia and increased cardiac output
Contraindications
- Aortic stenosis
- Aortic coarctation
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Dosing
- 1-3 mg/kg IV (maximum 150 mg)
Adverse Effects
- Hypotension
- Fluid retention after prolonged use
- Hyperglycemia
Interactions
- May potentiate warfarin's anticoagulant effects
Pregnancy
- Class C
- Has caused skeletal, cardiac, and pancreatic abnormalities in animals
