Our Department of Emergency Medicine is committed to providing patient-centered, efficient care; applying leading-edge skills to combat serious illness and injury; training the next generation of emergency medicine experts, and conducting innovative research to prevent injury and disease.
Since 1989, the UC Irvine School of Medicine's Emergency Medicine Residency Program has been training leaders in emergency medicine.

We are the detectives of medicine, with laboratory, bedside ultrasound and advanced imaging at our fingertips. Coupled with a patient's history and physical exam, we deduce what is wrong and gain the satisfaction of seeing the benefits of our treatment in real time.
UC Irvine Medical Center is a Level I trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, burn center, and cardiac receiving center. As the comprehensive tertiary care center for Orange County’s diverse population of 3 million people, our medical center provides residents with a wide range of clinical experiences.

In the course of a year, UC Irvine Health Emergency Medicine Services receives over 49,000 patient visits yearly. The Department has the first Orange County Emergency Department observation unit and also directs an After-Hours Care clinic for less serious complaints.
In addition to UC Irvine Medical Center, our residents rotate at CHOC Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Miller Children’s Hospital, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Mission Hospital and the VA Long Beach Healthcare System.

We are the entry point for Orange County’s only Level I Trauma Center and Regional Burn Center. We care for more than 5000 trauma victims per year, and more than 300 burn victims.
During each shift, residents see a high volume of new, undifferentiated patients. We are proud of our one-on-one apprenticeship model. Our residents present every patient to an emergency medicine faculty member, never to a fellow resident. As such, our residents get the highest level of teaching for each patient case.

Our weekly conference appeals to today’s learners with high-yield, interactive didactics given by experts in all aspects of emergency medicine.

We also receive patients en route to the UC Irvine Health Comprehensive Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center, as well as Orange County’s designated cardiac receiving center. We have specialists standing by at all times to intervene to dissolve and remove blood clots that cause heart attack and stroke.

History

Since 1989, the UC Irvine School of Medicine's Emergency Medicine Residency Program has been training leaders in emergency medicine.

UC Irvine Medical Center is a Level I trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, burn center, and cardiac receiving center. As the comprehensive tertiary care center for Orange County’s diverse population of 3 million people, our medical center provides residents with a wide range of clinical experiences.

In addition to UC Irvine Medical Center, our residents rotate at CHOC Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Miller Children’s Hospital, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Mission Hospital and the VA Long Beach Healthcare System.
