Conjunctival abrasion

Background

  • Conjunctiva has less innervation than cornea so pts are far less symptomatic

Clinical Features

  1. Foreign body sensation
  2. Mild pain
  3. Photophobia (rare)
  4. Subconjunctival hemorrhage (rare)

Diagnosis

  1. Slit-lamp exam w/ fluorescein
    1. Seidel test to role-out globe perforation

Treatment

  1. Remove conjunctival foreign bodies
  2. Erythromycin ointment 0.5% QID x2-3d
  3. Suture of lacerations is almost never required
