History

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at LewisGale Medical Center is a community-based program located in Salem, Virginia, in the heart of the Roanoke Valley. Established in 2020, the program is fully accredited and is dedicated to developing the next generation of physicians and physician leaders through a mission-driven approach: "Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life."

Training at LewisGale offers a unique blend of high-volume clinical exposure and academic rigor. The emergency department treats approximately 67,000 patients annually and serves as a major referral center for Southwest Virginia. As one of Virginia’s newest Level II Trauma Centers, the program provides residents with the diversity and acuity needed to master all aspects of emergency care. The residency utilizes a "resident-first" culture, prioritizing high-quality education, hands-on procedural experience, and wellness.

Training Locations

Primary Hospital

LewisGale Medical Center (LGMC) Located in Salem, VA, LGMC is the primary education site for all PGY trainees. It is a 506-bed award-winning facility and a Level II Trauma Center. The ED features 28 exam rooms with dedicated low-acuity treatment space and flexible care areas.

Secondary Hospitals

Cave Spring & Blue Hills Freestanding EDs Located in Roanoke, VA, these sites provide exposure to community emergency medicine and "bread and butter" pathology, including increased pediatric volume.

Curriculum

PGY1

The intern year focuses on mastering fundamentals through broad clinical rotations:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Anesthesiology
  • Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
  • OB-GYN
  • Cardiology
  • Radiology
  • Internal Medicine
  • Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS)
  • Certification: ATLS is completed during the PGY-1 year.

PGY2

The second year emphasizes increased clinical responsibility and specialized care:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Simulation & Teaching
  • Trauma Surgery
  • EMS
  • Elective (1 month)

PGY3

The final year focuses on senior leadership, autonomy, and critical care:

  • Emergency Medicine (Senior/Lead roles)
  • Trauma ICU
  • Pediatric ICU
  • Elective (1 month)

Electives

Local elective rotations with EM faculty include:

  • Wilderness Medicine
  • Advanced Ultrasound
  • Administration / Healthcare Management
  • New elective rotation construction encouraged
