Background

  • A collection of blood outside of the testicle within the scrotal sac (in the tunica vaginalis)
  • Most commonly caused by trauma or surgery

Clinical Features

  • Recent blunt GU trauma
  • Absence of fever
  • Scrotal swelling
  • Scrotal pain

Differential Diagnosis

Evaluation

  • Scrotal ultrasound with doppler
  • Positive cremasteric reflex
  • Poor transillumination of scrotal sac

Management

  • Urology consultation if related to acute trauma

Disposition

  • If isolated hematocele, likely outpatient follow-up
