Airway obstruction?

  • Assess for history or concern for foreign body causing airway obstruction

Yes

No

Begin BVM

If BVM is not effective perform the following:

  • Reposition Airway
  • Check correct mask size
  • Place OPA
  • Check for gastric distention

Is BVM effective?

Yes

  • Monitor and transport

No

Place iGel
  • If iGel is not available or if unable to oxygenate/ventilate place ET Tube
Is there effective oxygenation and ventilation?

Assess:

  • ETCO2 Reading
  • Misting in tube
  • Equal breath sounds
  • Direct visualization of the cords if ETT used.
Yes
  • Monitor and transport
No

Check airway device

  • Tube dislodged?
  • Tube obstructed?
  • Pneumothorax?
  • Equipment failure?
