Pathogenosis - retinal capillary rupture and reparative process (platelet adhesion in center of hemorrhage)

- subacute bacterial endocarditis - considered pathognomonic
- leukemias
- anemia
- anoxia
- sickle cell
- connective tissue disease
- scurvy
- systemic lupus erythematosus
- carbon monoxide poisoning
- prolonged intubation during anesthesia
- hypertensive retinopathy
- pre-eclampsia
- diabetes
- neonatal birth trauma
- mothers who have undergone traumatic deliveries
- battered children / shaken baby syndrome
- intracranial haemorrhage from arteriovenous malformation
- ocular decompression following trabeculectomy
