Background

First responders are trained healthcare volunteers and workers who tend to medical emergencies until more professionally trained help has arrived.

Historic perspective

The word First responder emerged in the press in the 1970s in the United States. It appeared in the Boston Globe in 1973 about developing Ambulance Regulations in Massachusetts. Within a short period, the word gained traction and its use became commonplace.
