General

  • Type: Coagulant
  • Dosage: Pre-metered, gauze in various sizes
    • Note: Used to be sold in powered form. DO NOT USE. Eye injury hazard. Expired.

Pre-hospital use

Indications

  • Cuts, lacerations, and abrasions w/ uncontrollable bleeding
    • Typical methods not working, ie. pressure

Directions for use

  • Used to stop active bleeding
  • Apply directly to wound
    • Do not pack wounds
  • Wrap gauze around to secure in place
  • If bleeding continues do not remove Quick Clot/Kaolin - wrap with addition gauze
  • Ensure during pt transfer the facility is aware you used Quick Clot/Kaolin

Mechanism of action

  • Active ingredient: Inorganic mineral Kaolin
    • Activates Factor XII - starts coagulation cascade
