Background

Adults = food bolus (usually meat) lodged above a peptic stricture or ring. >12 hours = risk of pulmonary aspiration.

Diagnosis

  1. dysphagia
  2. odynophagia

Work-Up

Consider soft tissue lateral

DDx

  1. stricture/ring
  2. cancer
  3. eosinophilic esophagitis
  4. achalasia

Treatment

  1. Coke-Cola PO
  2. Nitro spray SL
  3. Glucagon (1.0 mg IV/IM)
  4. Endoscopy

Disposition

  1. resolved (spontaneously or after medical Tx) --> outpt GI referal
  2. not resolved --> GI consult
