At the Virginia Tech Carilion Emergency Medicine residency, we provide comprehensive training that prepares our resident physicians to confidently work in any ED setting. Immediate access to outdoor activities, an affordable cost of living, and a high-acuity training site offer a work-life balance that cannot be replicated.

Our residents experience all aspects of emergency care. The majority of training occurs at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, (CRMH) our tertiary care, Level I Trauma Center, with 84,000 visits per year and a 30% admit rate. The patient volumes and complexities place CRMH in the top 5% of high-acuity academic emergency departments. Residents also rotate in our community and rural sites, a short commute from Roanoke. Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital provides the opportunity to experience emergency medicine critical access setting. Residents learn to practice with minimal in-house support and how to utilize regional resources and the transfer system. Carilion New River Valley Medical Center (CNRV) is a busy community ED and Level III trauma center with 30,000 annual visits. CNRV has ample specialty coverage in surgery, orthopedics, OB/GYN, peds, cardiology, urology, and gastroenterology.

We are committed to your development as an emergency physician and future leader in Emergency Medicine. With our tailored curriculum and 70+ faculty members, we have the resources to guide and mentor you into the field of your choice, inspiring you to reach your full potential.

The Carilion Clinic Emergency Medicine faculty provide medical care in six hospitals throughout western Virginia, serving a diverse population of 1.3 million people and receiving exposure to a broad spectrum of disease and injury. Residents rotate through two of these hospitals during residency training.

The Residency

As the only Level 1 Trauma Center and Pediatric ED servicing a 6,000-square-mile catchment area, our residency program offers a unique and unparalleled training experience. Residents are immersed in a dynamic, high-acuity, high-volume emergency department, exposing them to a remarkably diverse patient population. A longitudinal EMS curriculum and community and critical access ED rotations ensure residents are exposed to all aspects of emergency care.

At the Virginia Tech Carilion Emergency Medicine residency, we provide comprehensive training that prepares our resident physicians to confidently work in any ED setting. Set in the picturesque Roanoke Valley, our program offers an excellent place to live and work.
