Background
This are the requirements for the Harbor-UCLA WikEM "Reading" Elective. We encourage other residency programs to offer a WikEM elective as well. Please feel free to use these guidelines or make your own.
Getting Started
- Get "writing" privileges for WikEM, if you don’t already have them
- Go to the site at http://www.wikem.org
- Click on [[Special:UserLogin|Log in / create count] in the upper right of the screen
- Learn how to make updates and enter new notes
- After logging in, from the Main Page click on the link “Create & Edit Notes”
- The link is on the left side pane
- We are trying to convert over all the notes to these standard formats
- Browse through some of the WikEM notes on topics of interest (if you haven’t used it much) to see what is already in the site and to get an idea of standard formatting
- Please DO NOT make your notes in Word and then copy and paste them into WikEM. It works better if you make them directly on the website (for formatting reasons)
Daily Instructions
- Choose mixture (see below) of:
- Updating existing notes
- You can pick whatever topics you like to edit. If there is a particular area you are weak (or strong) that you want to focus on, you can choose those topics/folders.
- Edits can range from formatting/spelling, to larger rewrites of content. Don’t be worried about changing content, as all versions are saved and can be edited back if people want to (that’s the whole “wiki” thing).
- To update a note:
- See directions on “Updating and Creating Notes” page
- Adding new notes
- You are welcome to choose your own reading focus. I tend to find the standard textbooks, EM-Updates, etc., higher yield (but you can also read journal papers).
- It is important that you search through WikEM to make sure you are not creating duplicates (in which case you can just update the note; see above)
- Relevant notes should be referenced in a “See Also” section at the bottom of your new note
- Things that you have "been meaning to look up while working but haven't gotten around to" are perfect for inputting into the system, since you will then be able to carry around the information at your fingertips for the rest of your EM career.
- The goal is definitely not to have an overwhelming amount of writing on the site, but rather to have a shortened version of what you "need to know." So, feel free to keep notes short (you can see the other notes for examples)
- To start a new note
- See directions on “Updating and Creating Notes” page
- Updating existing notes
- You are responsible for doing a minimum of 3 updates or 1 new note per day of your elective (not including weekend days)
- Each new note counts for 3 updates
- So, for a one week elective, you need to do:
- 15 updates, or
- 5 new notes, or
- Some mixture that comes out to the same
- (e.g. 2 new notes and 9 updates)
- For longer electives, simply multiply to get the required total
Documentation
- We need to be able to document your work (for residency requirements)
- It doesn't matter what times or days you actually do the work, as long as the total requirement is met by the end of your elective period. You can work a weekend and take a weekday off, or double up on one day and take the next off. You get the idea.
- You can see how you're doing in the "Recent Changes" tab
- Left side of the WikEM page
- You need to copy and paste the activity during your elective period (found on the above page) into a Word document and send it to me at the end of your elective
- Go to “Recent Changes”
- Find your name and click on the “contribs” link next to it
- Copy and paste (into Word) your list of contributions
- It should look something like this:
