Background

  • Staphylococcal enterocolitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the intestines caused by Staphylococcus aureus
  • Can occur after antibiotic use disrupts normal flora
  • Also associated with enteral feeding and post-surgical states

Clinical Features

  • Profuse watery diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever
  • Dehydration

Differential Diagnosis

Infectious diarrhea

Evaluation

  • Stool culture
  • CBC, BMP for dehydration assessment

Management

Antibiotic Dosing

Adult

Pediatric

  • Vancomycin 40mg/kg/day PO divided q6h (max 2g/day)

Disposition

  • Admission for severe dehydration or systemic toxicity
  • Outpatient management for mild cases
