	Vanderbilt's Department of Emergency Medicine is a leader in clinical care, education, and research. Their combined emergency departments see over 103,000 patients annually. They are the only adult and pediatric Level 1 trauma center in middle Tennessee. Their Chairman and Residency Director make education their number one priority. Either Dr. Slovis or Dr. Wrenn teaches a morning conference 5 days a week, 52 weeks per year in addition to directing the Residency's 5 required hours of didactics each week. Every faculty member and upper level resident views excellent teaching as part of his or her responsibilities. 			Vanderbilt believes in creating a positive learning environment both in the classroom and at the bedside. Both Drs. Wrenn and Slovis are nationally known educators and set the standard for the department's style-interactive teaching in a relaxed but challenging environment. Our fourth year medical student rotation is the highest rated required clinical rotation in the medical school. Numerous faculty are research leaders in the field of emergency medicine, several of whom are conducting NIH-sponsored research. Our department had over 50 peer-reviewed publications within the last calendar year. Details of our residency are provided in the residency section of our site.

	*Our curriculum utilizes the vast resources of Vanderbilt to provide optimal, state-of-the-art training in Emergency Medicine. Successful completion of this curriculum means residents will pass ABEM certification examinations and have the knowledge base and procedural skill set to enter any practice setting. Residents will receive ultrasound training, advanced airway training, and significant critical care, resuscitation, trauma, and prehospital experiences. ED blocks include a combination of shifts at both VUH and VCH to offer continuous exposure to pediatrics throughout the calendar year.
